A picker is a person who goes around to various properties and culls items, usually for the purpose of turning them into something else. pickers can do anything from finding "junk" to hard-to-find antiques. They also sometimes buy items from individuals, shops and other sources.
Pickers work in a variety of settings and locations. Ideal spots for pickers are estate sales, auctions, garage sales, flea markets and antique stores. During these searches for treasure, pickers look out for the unique objects that others may not have noticed or need taken away.
The most successful pickers make their living by recognizing the value in an item – they are able to discern what an item could become when given another life; they seek objects that have potential and can be restored or made into something else with effort. Sometimes this effort requires a lot of work or creativity as well as dedication in searching for details such as unusual colors, patterns or materials.
What makes a great picker is being well informed on various culture trends; understanding where to source unique pieces related to those trends; being able to spot a bargain; having knowledge about restoring so you know what needs fixing up and how to go about doing it; networking with other pickers for new ideas; becoming recognized in the run-and-gunner community so people know you will buy from them; travelling regularly -no matter the location- in order to find rare items not normally seen elsewhere.
